King William I of England (also known as "William the Conqueror" and as William II, Duke of Normandy), was the son of Robert II, Duke of Normandy and his wife, Herleva. Herleva was William's mother but she was not Robert's wife. She was a tanner's daughter.

William was not the legitimate son of Robert II, he was a bastard and thoughout history until the advent of politer times, he was referred to as William the Bastard.

King James I (the VI of Scotland) was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots. She was forced to abdicate from the Scottish throne because of an uprising (which made her year-old son king). James' father was Mary's second husband Henry Stuart. Henry's grandmother was an older sister of Henry VIII.
