Elizabeth I 1558-1603, was Queen of England and, separately, Queen of Ireland.

James I 1603-1625, was King James VI of Sotland and also became King James I of England on the death of Elizabeth I. He too, held the separate title King of Ireland.

Charles I 1625-1649, also seperately held the titles King of England, King of Scotland and King of Ireland.

Charles I was executed for "treason" in 1649, bringing an end to The English Civil War.

From 1649 until 1653, the country was governed by "The Barebones Parliament" which set itself the task of deciding what kind of government should rule the country.

Oliver Cromwell 1653-1658, became "Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of Great Britain and Ireland."

He was succeeded by his son, Richard Cromwell 1658-1659, who was also "Lord Protector"

In 1660, the Monarchy was restored and Charles II 1660-1685, became King of England. Like his predecessors he was also separately King of Scotland and King of Ireland.

He was succeeded by his son James II 1685-1688 who, because he was a Catholic was deposed in favour of his daughter -

Mary II and William III - 1689-1702. Mary died in 1694 and her husband, William III, reigned alone until his death in 1702. Under his reign the crowns of England and Scotland were formally united and he became King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain (which included England, Scotland and Wales) and he was also separately King of Ireland.

Queen Anne, George I and George II held the titles "King (or Queen) of Great Britain" and still separately "King (or Queen) of Ireland."

George III 1760-1820 In 1801, under the reign of George III, the crown of Ireland was united amd he became "King of Great Britain and Ireland" the title held by each Monarch until 1922.

George V 1910-1936 In 1922 the southern part of Ireland was partitioned and became a separate country which is now called "The Republic of Ireland." The six counties of Northern Ireland remained a part of the United Kingdom which then became "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" which is its present title and the descriptor of each monarch who followed.
