The story is told that President William Howard Taft (in office 1909-1913) got stuck in a White House bathtub and it took several men to pull him out. The truth of the story can not be verified-- it is almost certainly false. What is true is that Taft was very heavy , weighing in at over 300 pounds, and that a new larger bath tub was installed for him in the White House. See the related link for a picture of the four installers sitting together in the new tub.

This rumor was formed about William Howard Taft. Taft was a big man and he arranged for a larger bathtub to be installed in the White House and a huge tub was installed. A photo was circulated showing four workmen sitting comfortably in the tub and so the rumor began. There is no evidence that the rumor is true and , if you think about it, it is highly unlikely. The old white house bath tub was no smaller than most tubs, Taft was no bigger than he had been for some time , took regular baths was in good health and in control of his body. He did not live alone in the White House and had a corps of trustworthy servants he could call if he needed help.

Did President William Howard Taft die in a bathtub?

No, President William Howard Taft did not die in a bathtub. He died of natural causes in his sleep at his home in Washington D.C. on March 8, 1930. Taft, the 27th President, was the largest President, weighing an official 332 pounds. He did need to have a larger bathtub to be installed in the White House after he moved in. Somebody, possibly the workers who installed the new tub and were amazed at its large size, started a story that he had been stuck in the old tub.
