In a conventional force of Navy, Army, Airforce a Special Forces branch of the Army would be the most likely to commit to operations first, Marines included. At this point it would still be considered Clandestine warfare. Once conventional warfare commenced a Commando or Marine force would secure a strong point and the rest of the military would commence unrestricted operations In the modern battlefield the first people committed are not there to fight they are there to advise on where the fight should begin.

The United States Marine Corps is the 'first to fight.' Forward-deployed on both Okinawa and any one of the seven Marine Expeditionary Units (MEU's, called Amphibious Ready Groups or an ARG by the Navy); the USMC is America's First-Response Force and able to provide infantry-artillery-armor-air for 30-45 days without reinforcement.
