They spoke what they thought, not what others thought.
Plato was a philosopher, not a Greek god.
Eratosthenes is a Greek Philosopher whom ideas were way out of his time. He discovered two important things about the earth, one in which is that the world is shape like a sphere in which we know today because of satellite imagery but in that time they did not have the the thought nor the technology. The next thing he discovered is the Earth's circumference which was only off by 185 miles. Another important fact is that Eratosthenes was in charge of the library in the city of Alexandria.
Greek philosopher Pythagoras is credited with being one of the first people to suggest that the Earth is a sphere, around 500 BC. However, it was later Greek philosopher Aristotle who provided more evidence for this idea in the 4th century BC.
The ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras is credited with being the first person to suggest that the Earth is a sphere and that it rotates around its axis.
The first man to theorize that the Earth was a sphere was the ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras in the 6th century BC. He believed that the Earth was round because of its symmetry and harmony with other celestial bodies.
In the Ptolemaic Greek model of the universe, the stars are thought to be attached to the celestial sphere, a hypothetical invisible sphere surrounding the Earth to which the stars were fixed. This model placed Earth at the center of the universe with all celestial bodies orbiting around it.
It came from a greek philosopher Empedocles
The ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras is credited with first proposing that the Earth was spherical around 500 BC. This idea was later supported by Aristotle and eventually confirmed through empirical evidence by astronomers like Eratosthenes.
The ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras is often credited with being one of the first to propose that the Earth is a sphere, around the 6th century BC. Later, Greek philosophers like Aristotle and Eratosthenes further supported the idea with observational evidence.
The concept of the solid sphere was introduced by the ancient Greek philosopher Empedocles in the 5th century BC as part of his theory of the four elements. He believed that all matter was composed of combinations of earth, air, fire, and water arranged in solid spherical shapes.
In the 6th century BC, the Greek philosopher Pythagoras is credited with being one of the first to propose that the Earth was a sphere, based on observations of the shape of the Earth's shadow during a lunar eclipse. Later, in the 3rd century BC, the Greek mathematician and astronomer Eratosthenes calculated the Earth's circumference with impressive accuracy by measuring shadows at different locations and angles. Together, these individuals helped to demonstrate that the Earth was larger than previously believed.
