The Sioux originated around the area of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, but with the advent of the horse their population exploded and they expanded west through Minnesota and into the Dakotas and the plains. The Sioux were an aggressively expansionist tribe who supplanted and warred with nearly every other tribe they encountered as they displaced other tribes ever further westward or southward. This expansion was made possible by the horse. Prior to the horse, Native Americans could not easily survive as nomads on the open plains. Along the way they split off into a bunch of sub-tribes such as the Assiniboin ... but today are largely identifiable as grouped into three distinct dialects, the Nakota, the Lakota and the Dakota. Same people, but three different accents.

In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Dakota-Lakota-Nakota speakers lived in the upper Mississippi Region in present day Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and the Dakotas. Conflicts with Anishnaabe and Cree peoples pushed the Lakota west onto the Great Plains in the mid- to late-17th century.

Around 1730 they got horses from the Cheyenne.

By about 1750-60 they had moved to the east bank of the Missouri River. The Arikara, Mandan, and Hidatsa villages prevented them from crossing the Missouri until the smallpox epidemic of 1772-1780 killed 3/4 of these tribes. The Lakota then crossed the river into the High Plains. In 1776, they defeated the Cheyenne in the Black Hills, who had earlier taken the region from the Kiowa. The Cheyenne then moved west to the Powder River country, and the Lakota made the Black Hills their home. This is a much simpified history.
