There is some controversay about where his remains ended up. His remains were buried in a crypt in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1542 after being sent there from a monastery in Spain. Supposedly his remains had been moved from Santo Domingo to Havana, Cuba in 1795, and from there to Seville, Spain in 1898. There is, however, DNA evidence that his remains never left Santo Domingo and that they are still there.

There has been at least 100 years controversy on this subject. Some say his bones are in Seville, Spain. Others think that he was buried in the "New World" that he traveled to so often. He could even be buried at both locations. He was moved frequently after his death.
