Germany celebrates a day similar to the 4th of July in the U.S. However, they celebrate the day that their country was unified after years of being separated into East and West Germany. This is the 3rd of October (1990).

Germany never needed to gain independence. It began as around 38 different countries that were unified by the Prussians in 1871.

If you are referring to East Germany breaking away from being a Soviet sattelite nation, that was in 1989.

The Germans don't see it that way. Historically, the key issue was unification - not liberation from foreign rule.

Germany was not under colonial rule. The process of unification lasted from 1866-1871.
