It DID win The Alamo. In fact, it became such a massacre (all 189 colonists were killed) that thousands of volunteers from southern states became so enraged that they helped Texas win its independence war against Mexico.
If Mexican president Santa Anna hadn't slaughtered all those colonists, opting to have them arrested instead, he would have prevented the massive wave of supporters to the Texan cause, eventually allowing Mexico to reclaim its lost territory.

The purpose for the Battle of the Alamo is that Mexico was pursuing north into Texas to fight the Texans. The Texans had declared their independence from the U.S. and Mexico. Mexico though didn't see Texas as an independent country so the Texans rebelled. The Battle of the Alamo was basically for the independence for Texas. Although we lost that battle we won the war and up until The Battle at San Jacinto, Mexico didnt view us as an independent nation.
