Traditionally, the Oglala Lakota Sioux did not have Family Names, or surnames. When they were required to register in order to receive land on the reservation and other assistance from the US Government, a surname was either chosen or given.

Many of the Oglala Lakota Sioux took the names of their parents or grandparents as a surname, or the name of a tribal leader. Others took or were given the surnames of other people in the area, names chosen by the Indian Agent or even the census takers or their interpreters.
