In the times of the Revolutionary War, the only music was live music-- no CD,s, no radios, nothing but whatever musical instruments they could carry with them. Singing was the easiest . Bugles, drums and fifes(flutes) were used for marching, but did not provide music that one would like to listen too, I think. Perhaps some fife players played around the campfires. Soldiers mostly had to walk from place to place and carry all their equipment for camping and cooking -- musical instruments were not common at all.
they sang and created instruments with natural resources.
After World War I there was a surplus of instruments from the bands that played during the war. Because of this, more people could afford instruments and the African American community could now play on many of these instruments and create their own music. In the long run this led to what we now call jazz.
