The Fascist movement in Spain was the Spanish Civil War. However the name most closely associated with the party was and is theFalange, which means phalanx in Spanish. King Alfonso XIII was forced to leave Spain in exile in order to avoid large scale violence after he allowed Democratic elections won by the leftist parties. Two fronts formed in Spain based on the politics of the time. There was the Popular front which consisted of the left wing parties, most notably the Socialist party, and the National Front, which consisted of right wing parties including the Falange members but not the official Falange party. Eventually, the composition of the opposing sides in the civil war formed themselves according to these party lines except the parties were the Nationalists and the Republicans. Francisco Franco was appointed as commander of Nationalist forces. Franco went on with battle with help from the other popular fascists in Europe, Mussolini and Hitler. Franco formed the Falange Española Tradicionalista or Traditional Spanish Phalanx Franco marched on several cities and freed them from the Republicans and eventually encircled Madrid. Franco marched into Madrid virtually unopposed due to heavy casualties suffered by the Republicans and this allowed Franco to announce the end of the war on April 1 1936.
