A typical American soldier in World War 2 was anywhere from the age of 17-45, from almost every city in America, small and large. He was usually brave on his shell but inside more scared than most humans have ever felt. He was patriotic, heroic, and keen.

Everybody will tell you that the correct answer is "GI", especially if you're asking for a school assignment. They were "GI"s because that's short for "Government Issue". Every piece of equipment and scrap of clothing they got was "GI" and they felt like that's what they were turned into also - a Government Issue item.

But that's really a post-war invention.

While the war was actually going on, they called themselves "doughs", "dogfaces" or "doggies". "Dough" was short for "Doughboys", which was what their fathers had been when they went to France to fight WWI. Supposedly this derives from service along the Mexican Border just before WWI - the marching soldiers got covered with Adobe dust, so they were "Adobes", then "doughboys". Not the Pillsbury Doughboy.

"Dogface" and "doggies" had been in use a long time too - because the Army treated privates like dogs. That's why they slept in pup tents.

So that's the real answer. But, if you're asking for schoolwork, stick with "GI".

The standard uniform for US infantry was the M-1941 clothing system was an olive-drab (OD) wool garrison cap, olive-drab wool trousers, an olive-drab wool shirt, a wool olive-drab four button tunic, and russet brown Type I service shoes. The basic Army field or combat uniform for temperate or cool climates consisted of the basic wool uniform, without tie, along with a field jacket or wool overcoat.
