The Magna Carta, also known as the Great Charter, prevented the king from collecting taxes from the people without the consent of the Great Council. It also garunteed freemen, or non-serfs (serfs being slaves, so non serfs are not slaves), the right of trial by jury. Designed to protect the feudal rights, the Magna Carta over time guaranteed the rights of all English people.

The Magna Carta is sometimes presented as a great step towards democracy, which it wasn't. It only gave some protection to the nobles and the English Catholic Church who as a group forced the document on the king: it was only them who could no longer be convicted without due course of law and it was only their posessions who were now protected against indiscriminate seizure by the King. The king remained completely free do do as he wished towards non-noble citizens, which were the vast majority in his Realm. But it's the principle that counts, of course.

As it turned out, the Magna Carta did not even offer the hoped-for protection to nobles and Church themselves. Henry VIII happily and undisturbed confiscated all the Catholic Church's possessions when he established his Church of England, and many nobles who had incurred the King's wrath would over the next centuries still find themselves locked in the Tower of London on his mere command.
