It was probably just called the New World. It is thought that the name America comes from the Italian Amerigo Vespucci, however Contries/continents are never named after first names. It is little known that it was named after a Welshman's last name; Americano. Also people think Cristopher Columbas first discovered America but in the 9th century a prince, Americano, crossed the Atlantic and settled upstream in what now is Alabama. He and his followers settled there and mixed with the natives but like the natives got wiped out by disease when europeans later arrived. This was one of Britain's arguments to their ownership of the New World.
