The Underground Railroad was not confined to a single town in Pennsylvania; rather, it spanned multiple locations throughout the state. However, one of the most notable towns associated with the Underground Railroad is Philadelphia, which served as a key hub for escape routes and abolitionist activity. Other significant locations include Lancaster and York, where many safe houses and stations existed to aid escaping slaves.

Notably, the home of Calvin Fairchild, who was a prominent abolitionist, and the nearby Wellington Town Hall were significant sites where escaping enslaved people found refuge. The area was part of a network of safe houses that helped many individuals reach freedom in Canada. Today, these sites are recognized for their historical importance in the fight against slavery.

There are various names that can may be given to such a town. A few popular ones are "railway town," "railroad town," "whistle stop," "boomtown," and "stationsby."
Typically because the reason for their being there in the first place went away. The town may have been a mining town- and the material being mined ran out. No mine, no town. It may have been a change in transportation- town was a railroad stop- but railroad opened a new route, bypassing town.

Hatch, New Mexico changed from being a railroad stop to a town when the 1886 flood of the Rio Grande wiped out the town of Santa Barbara causing the survivors to move to Hatch.
