John Brown kept no party affiliation for decades and was not a supporter of any political party throughout his public career as an abolitionist. Brown was a big supporter of John Quincy Adams, who was an abolitionist, and whose administration also appointed Brown as postmaster in Randolph Township, near Meadville, Pa., in the 1820s. But thereafter Brown never supported any candidate or party that I am aware of, and I doubt he would have supported Abraham Lincoln, who was elected in 1860 because he was actually a moderate in his attitude toward dealing with slavery. Brown would have had no patience with someone willing to limit slavery's expansion but not willing to abolish it. According to journalist William A. Phillips, in early 1859, Brown told him that he believed that the South would secede from the Union if a Republican was elected in the next presidential election. Seems Old Brown was correct.
