The surname Berumen is clearly associated with the Zacatecas region of Mexico as eraly as the 17th century. It's origin and meaning before that is unclear. However, Ancestry.com notes that immigrants of that name, listed in the New York Passenger lists, were coming from Sweden, Italy, Ireland, and Germany.

The surname Berumen has German origins even though many ancestry websites give it a Mexican origin. There were two brothers who migrated from Bremen, Germany to Zacatecas, Mexico to work in the silver mines (their last name was Bremen). Once they were in Mexico the brothers married some native girls. To become more assimilated to the Mexican Culture they changed their last name from Bremen to Berumen.
