The fence was called a palisade. A palisade could be either of wood or of stone. There could be a small wall around the keep which was called a chemise or mantlet. I have been unable to find whether a chemise was also a palisade.

On Motte and Bailey castles the wooden fence is called a palisade.
Motte and Bailey, it was a small wooden keep and a almost village where the soilders lived surronded by a wooden fence and a moat
a sturdy wooden fence used for a fortification.
Strengths:Only take a few days to buildReally light which makes it easier to buildQuite strongBuilt on a hill so you can see the enemy approachingMade of wood- so quick and easy to buildHas a moat and a fence so it is more difficult to attack.Weaknesses:Catches fire easilyWood can rot with the rain; it generally weakens with age.Wood is a weak building material so therefore these castles could not be bigThe motte can collapse with the weight of the castle on itThey were not big enough to house large groups of troops
Before 1066 there were very few castles. They were not part of the culture of England. Once William invaded he began to throw up motte and bailey castles, consisting a large earthen mound with a fence around it and more often than not, but not always, a tower of some kind on the motte. These were all timber. After the conquest, once the country was secure, William began to replace the timber castles with stone ones. These took the same form as those in France. Compare the donjon at Domfront with the the square stone keeps of Rochester and the Tower of London. Castles did not change for a hundred years or so, still using a large tower as the centre of the castle, a bailey or courtyard around it where the majority of the castle's population lived and worked, stables, kitchens, workshops, barracks. Once King John lost Normandy in 1204 castle building in Normandy / France and England diverged and hugely different styles grew up. In England castles retained their central towers but the baileys were converted and sometimes enlarged to create more space for more luxurious accomodation than was possible in the towers. Great halls were in the bailey, mural towers, square and round, grew up along the bailey walls and gate houses became popular to give more protection for the bailey. Towers were also deemed to be less impervious as they were once King John brought down a chunk of Rochester's keep in 1216. A more sprawling castle layout was less vulnerable. Edward I was the great castle builder in the later Medieval period, creating a ring of stone around north Wales to prevent uprisings from the conquered Welsh. These castles were the brain child of James of St George, a castle builder who took his inspiration from the vast fortresses of the Holy Land. Caernarfon castle in North Wales, had it ever been finished, would have had six port cullises and towers to house them, to protect the entrance to a castle that was all bailey with buildings and towers and walkways all around the walls. With the advent of a more settled homeland, with focus not on internal strife but external wars, castles began to decline. They were not fortresses to make a point to the locals, to subjugate them or to provide particular protection. They were homes, and subsequent new homes became more comfortable, less martial, and castles began to fall out of favour. By Tudor times castles had already been replaced by country houses and during the Golden Age houses such as Chatsworth were built. The castle was dead and the country house was born.

A Medieval castle was a very complex structure and there are lots of things about them that you will recognize. A Motte and Bailey was an early form of castle where a large mound of dirt was built up then a wooden fortification was placed on top. This wooden fortification was in the shape of a timber fence that formed a circle like a crown at the top of the mound. The Mound is the motte, and the timber fence and the space it enclosed is the Bailey.
it had a wooden fence around it but theu used mud ect to build the mound which was the safest place in the castle

The length of a fence that surrounds 220 acres depends on the shape of the fence. A circular fence, a rectangle, a square, etc. If it's a square it would be 2.345 miles or 12383 feet long
Yard is to fence as cell is to membrane. Just like a fence surrounds a yard and allows certain objects in and out, a membrane surrounds the cell and only allows specific nutrients inside of it.
motte is the highest mound in the barons area with a tall house or castle called the keep and the bailey is the area below that it like a court yard and leads up to the keep but is protected by the palissade (which is the large tall fence surronding the motte and bailey castle and the drawbrige. this is to keep enemys at bay!!!!!

black-smiths and soldiers mainly lived in motte and bailey castles!.x
Motte and Bailey Castles, Concentric Castles and Stone Castles protect you when you are under attack. These type of castles where used by the Normans after they had taken control of England. They built castles all around the Country. The castles got most the English men under control. The few that they hadn't got under control led rebellians to try and destroy one of the Normans' castle. The castles were too powerful and always overpowered the rebellers.
A motte is a Big 12m high mound of earth and a bailey is a area inside the fence
