The things that survived the change were notably, the things that were able to hibernate, such as the reptiles and their cousins; and most of the fish and sharks. These were able to survive the immediate temperature changes, which may have been severe, and even may have been able to take advantage of the death of other species.

There had been an earlier extinction event known as the Permian-Triassic in which 96% of all marine species became extinct, and 70% of terrestrial. Including perhaps 100% of insect species. This was the most severe event we believe.
