Madam C. J. Walker is probably best known as a pioneer of the modern hair care industry because of the hair care products she created in 1906. During her lifetime, she also was well-known for her philanthropy (which included a $1000 gift to the Indianapolis YMCA, a $5,000 gift to the NAACP and several donations to black schools, churches and community organizations). for her support of the arts (including commissioning art work from young African American artists and being the treasurer of Harlem's Music School Settlement); and for her political activism (which included a visit to the White House in 1917 to urge President Woodrow Wilson to support legislation to make lynching a federal crime).
