A Cav Scout is a soldier that deploys in a two man team and sets up an observation camp within sight of enemy camps. Then they either observe their movements and wait for reinforcement or link up with the other teams in the area and conduct a raid on the camp. They work for the American National Guard (ANG).
howdy' Darling, I love you
Speaking about the US Army in Vietnam and discounting the USMC, and US Army Armor & Infantry battalions; there were TWO types of mounted forces in the war: 1. US Mechanized Infantry battalions 2. US Armored Cavalry Squadrons Both of those types of units fielded about 900 men, with the Cav units sometimes exceeding 1,000 men due to their organic aviation (helicopers) & artillery troops/batteries. There was nearly no difference between a Mech & Cav unit. The only real way to tell them apart (besides looking at their insignias, if they bore them) was if they had tanks with them (after 1969, they would be M551 Sheridan tanks (made of aluminum, and officially called "assault vehicles"). If they were all tracks (all M113 ACAVs) then they were most likely a mech unit. If they had Sheridans with them, they were a cav outfit. Brigade=Regiment Battalion=Squadron Company=Troop (Company=Battery in the Artillery) A US Cav Trp consisted of roughly 3 platoons and a HQ platoon. A US Cav Plt consisted of roughly 3 Sheridan tanks, 4 Scout tracks (ACAVs), 1 Grunt track (Infantry ACAV), 1 Mortar track (M125 looks like an ACAV), 1 commo track, 2 Radar tracks (GSR-Ground Surveillance Radar), and a Plt HQ track. About 13 tracks total (tanks were also called tracks sometimes); and about 64 cavalrymen total per plt. Times three (to equal a troop) roughly 200 cavalrymen when counting the command group of officers and men. Alot different than an "old west" frontier US Cav horse unit which might only have about 40 cavalrymen per troop. They didn't have mortars, radar, commo, etc.
Hal Newhouser was the scout of the Houston Astros at the time and scouted Jeter.
The Vietnam War was the first war that the US Army used the "basic" configuration that established the "armored cavalry" of today. During that war, the US Army Armored Cav units were deployed to Vietnam in Regiments (only one full regiment, the 11th ACR was deployed) and about 10 Armored Cav Squadrons, and a few armored Cav Troops (A, 4/12 Cav as one example). The Full regiment in Vietnam (11th ACR) consisted of 3 Sqd's, containing 3 or 4 ground troops (A, B, C) and and air troop (helicopters) and a tank company. Individual Armored Cav Sqd's consisted of about the same, MINUS the tank companies. Example: the full regiment had a company of 17 Patton tanks. The Sqd's did not. The typical Armored Cav Sqd consisted of about 3 ground troops and 1 air troop. The Troops (A, B, C,) consisted of M113 ACAVs and M551 Sheridan tanks (Armored Reconnaissance Assault Vehicles). The air troop usually consisted of UH-1 Iroquois, OH-6 Cayuse, AH-1 Cobras and OH-58 Kiowa helicopters. While the whole sqd was commanded by an LTC, the air troop was commanded by a MAJ, while the ground troops were commanded by a CPT. A full bird COL commanded the full regiment (the 11th ACR was commanded by COL George S. Patton, son of WWII Patton). Whenever you see photographs of Sheridans and ACAVs together in one Vietnam War photo, you're looking at a US Armored Cav picture.

Headquarters and Headquarters Troop
Infantry is still in existence, because that was our main approach at Iraq. Cavalry exists in the form of cars in place of horses. Navy definitely exists: There's a whole branch in the military for that. There are two types of cavalry still in existence - armoured cavalry, and air cavalry. The infantry element of an air cav unit was replaced by air assault infantry, but attack and scout helicopter formations are still part of air cav.
