Michinomiya Hirohito as found at the Britannica link below.
When an emperor of Japan dies he is given a new, unique designation and in formal or official Japanese settings his name while alive is never used again. Hirohito is now The Shōwa Emperor. This is a tradition that will probably be continued with Hirohito's heir Akihito, and future emperors. This is related to the historical belief that the emperor is divine. This belief was still widely if not universally held in Japan when Hirohito was born, but following Japan's defeat in World War 2, Hirohito formally declared himself over the radio to be human and not divine. It stunned and saddened the nation. I believe this was the first and possibly only time that Hirohito's voice was heard by the entire nation. The emperor was so carefully and completely kept apart from the general population that he spoke only the ancient court form of Japanese, and most of the people were not able to understand his statement without translation.
