What is Abraham Lincoln's position and attitude towards blacks during the Civil War?

Lincoln thought all people of color should be sent back to their country of origin or to Liberia. He had very strong feelings against the Negro race feeling they were much inferior to the White race. Liberia was bought by the US to house those repatriated slaves and people of color who wished to leave. His emancipation proclamation was an attempt to instigate slave rebellion in the Confederate States and did not free any slaves. It stated that those states in rebellion slaves would be freed "IF" they did not lay down arms and surrender. It played upon fears of past slave rebellions IE Nat Turners and Hatt, but had no effect at all prior to the wars ending. It did not free any slaves held in Union States.

Lincoln thought that African Americans deserved every chance at equality and freedom. He perceived them to be as equal as whites. He was assassinated for these types of beliefs, unfortunately.

Abraham Lincoln believed that African-Americans were deserving of equal rights to Whites, but considered them to be mentally deficient. His view is clarified by the quote below.

Abraham Lincoln said in Charleston on September 18, 1858: "I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races -- that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything."
