He was a Mexican president and general. Together with Vicente Guerrero drafted the Plan of Casamata, transforming Mexico from a monarchy into a Federal Republic.

Later, he acted as president during the Texas Revolution and was called to serve the army during the Mexican-American War. After his defeat, he also was instrumental during the Gadsden purchase.

He is one of the most infamous presidents in Mexico, being held accountable for the loss of almost half of the Mexican territory to the United States.
