Jefferson borrowed heavily from the ideas of john Locke in the Declaration of Independence although one important thing to note is that Jefferson changed Locke's wording of "life, liberty and property" to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" possibly in an attempt to avoid the issue of slavery
