I have been looking for Richard B for some years. He used to stay with me in Mexico City after leaving Salvador. When the film was being made of his Salvador existence, he was staying with Oliver Stone in the Zona Rosa in Mexico City. After that, things went quiet. I heard that he fell out with Oliver S who had been a good friend to him for many years. He was giving lectures at USC cinema school in the 1990's. If anyone has any news of him I would love to hear where he is. "...In 1988 Richard became a professor at USC, teaching film writing. One of his students from the mean streets of LA showed Richard his script. Richard loved it, voted it best student screenplay and John Singleton's Boyz 'n the Hood, is history. That same year, fed up with the state legislature cutting the education budget and spending too much for administrators, he trained a group of high school and community college students and taught them how to make TV commercials, which made the difference in the passage of Prop. 98.
In 1991 Richard went to Stanford to join Condolezza Rice on the faculty and a year later went to his alma mater, San Francisco State to teach post-graduate screenwriting. In 2007 Richard raced down to red carpet with Forest Whitaker, an old pal he coached for the film Platoon shot in "86. Richard came back to San Bernardino County in '93, Race for the Oscars buying a home in Forest Falls. A correspondent for the San Bernardino Sun, he also taught screenwriting workshops at Crafton Hills College and has been active in various community affairs: for child rights, getting more money for forest fire protection, and working with the Redlands police chief to prevent illegal trucks from causing accidents.
This year he addressed a convention of Iraq war veterans in New York and attended the funeral of best friend Dith Pran, the inspiration of the film, Killing Fields. He and Precy just finished their book about child abuse in preschools and Richard will be the subject of a major new Canadian film about the Vietnam War. As a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, he again was selected to be a judge for the best amateur scripts from all over the world."
