Nothing.

It just 'proclaimed' that all Southern slaves (but not Northern ones) were "thenceforward and forever free". Since Lincoln's word wasn't law in the South, this altered nothing on the ground.

The effect was felt by the British, who had come close to recognising the Confederacy and sending military aid. The Proclamation had turned the war into an official crusade against slavery, so making it impossible for free nations abroad to support the South.

It stated on paper that all slaves were to be free. Although many slave owners on rural plantations in the south continued to own slaves.

Also, it affected the financial industry of the slave trade from a business stand point.

People who kidnapped and transported slaves from Africa no longer had jobs. Auctioners no longer had jobs.

The slave owners who released their slaves turned to share cropping as a form of payment to the former slaves. Which still never balanced out for the slave because the plantation owner always claimed a loss at the end of the season. Therefore the only payment was to continue to live in a run down shack on the property. Which was fine for some slaves because they had no money or any other place to go.

this is not my answer but i fount this and i figured this will help but this is form some one with a username flight745: so thank him for taking his time to giv a grate ansewr! (:

After the January 1, 1863 Emancipation proclamation, Southern slaves were encouraged to move north under the Union army's protection. In addition, many were encouraged to work for the US army. Later they were enlisted in segregated battle units or regiments led by a white officer/
