Nothing. They held it until they got to the next service station. Seriously, they used rags or other cloths which they washed and reused as they did any other laundry (probably using more soap with it, however!). If a stream was nearby, they also were prone to allow the water's current to do its work (water splash is used in parts of the Middle East today).
