Plato believes that the human soul preexisted before its contact with the body. He argues that the contact between the body and the soul is accidental. The soul for him, came from the world of forms and will return back to the world of forms after it frees itself from the body. The soul for plato is immutable, ideal and real.Only the soul exist, the body is merely an illusion.Through his conviction about the human souls,he posited that the soul knows before it accidental contact with the body.He thus suggests knowlege as reminiscence(i.e.knowledge by recollection).Plato believes that the soul is immortal.

Plato's work called Menos explains his ideas on this.
