Ferdinand Magellan, Explorer
Portuguese name: Fernao de Magalhaes
Magellan was born in Portugal, but it was under the Spanish flag that he sailed in 1519 with the intention of reaching the Spice Islands by sailing west around South America. After much hardship he succeeded in reaching and then sailing across the Pacific Ocean. Soon thereafter he was killed while trying to subdue the natives on what is now the island of Mactan in the Philippines. After still more hardships, one of his original five ships, Victoria, eventually made it back to Spain. Though Magellan didn't complete the entire circumnavigation, as the expedition's leader he is usually credited with being the first man to circle the globe.

Viper1 He Captained the first circumnavigation of the earth.
Ferdinand Magellan was most famous for having the 1st voyage around the world. his 5 ships were the sanot Antonio the conception the the Victoria and the Santiago. Magellan was killed by poison arrow through the foot and a spear through the heart. he died in the island of Cebu in the city of mactan and in the country of Philippines.
That voyage was when he wanted to find a western trade route to Asia. He took 5 ships & 260 men. (only 1 ship & 18 men survived the whole thing) At the southern tip of America is where the Strait of Magellan is (obviously which he named). He also named the Pacific Ocean on that journey. When water and food ran out sailors were dropping like flies... ALSO when they reached the Philippines they were caught between one of the local chiefs & his enemy which is when Magellan died. The remainder of the crew sailed to Spain and got there is 1522. That was also when they completed the first circumnavigation which meant he proved the world wasn't flat! They also brought back spices with them but it was almost not enough to cover the expenses from the voyage.
