James I (of England) & VI of Scots was the only son of Mary Queen of Scots and her second husband Henry Lord Darnley. Both were tall, and very beautiful. Lord Darnley was blonde and blue eyed and Mary red haired and hazel eyed. James inherited his mother's colouring but little else. People wondered at the time how such a handsome couple could have produced such a little, bandy legged, child whose tongue was too big for his mouth. He was by ALL written accounts very unprepossessing.

Because Elizabeth I had no heir, her cousin became the King after her death. King James I was known as a very smart man and funny, but was intensely private and distrusting.

When his tomb was opened he was found to be short and stocky and dark red haired.
