During the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, there were approximately 100 medical facilities established to provide care for the wounded. These included field hospitals set up by both the Union and Confederate armies, as well as makeshift hospitals in local buildings and homes. The sheer number of casualties prompted a rapid expansion of medical services to cope with the overwhelming need for care. Overall, the medical response at Gettysburg was one of the largest and most organized of the Civil War.
Clara Barton significantly impacted healthcare by founding the American Red Cross in 1881, which established standards for disaster relief and emergency medical care. Her efforts during the Civil War, where she provided nursing care and organized supply distribution, highlighted the importance of organized medical assistance in crises. Barton's advocacy for the humane treatment of wounded soldiers and her emphasis on the need for trained nurses laid the groundwork for modern nursing and healthcare systems. Her legacy continues to influence disaster response and public health initiatives today.

A "true" definition of "Organized Medicine" is difficult to come by. In a layman's sense, I would say Organized Medicine is simply the organization of the medical profession as a whole. The cohesive structure of the medical profession as an organized group then becomes an "Interest Group" through which they can illicit a powerful organized voice and effect policies and procedures in both a social and "professional group" sense. It is very much like the concept of "Organized Labor" but involves medical "professionals" ("white collar) rather than laborers ("blue collar").
