My maternal grandparents' last name was Markovitz.. My mothers' father was the Markovitz..his family came from Hungary. From what I learned is that the name may have originated in France..as they were wine growers..this was after the last turk invasion and the country side was destroyed.. the magyars imported wine growers to make wine.. the Markovitz's also have different spellings.. but they all seem to be from the same line. There also seems to be 2 branches, religion-wise..catholics and jewish...which came first? I don't know. Hope this helps you out a bit.
