The main cash crops were tobacco, rice, and indigo. The states that grew these cash crops were Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. These crops provided revenue to the planters of these states, who did not have the manufacturing, shipping, or commerce of the Northern states.
After 1793 (the invention of the cotton gin), cotton became the dominant crop in the South, so that by 1860, the southern US produced as much as 75% of the world's raw cotton.
