It depends on what you mean by the first computer:
  1. There were many mechanical analog computers from the 1890s through the 1950s doing many different calculations, it is hard to document "firsts" among these machines.
  2. There were many electronic analog computers from the 1930s through the 1970s doing many different calculations, it is hard to document "firsts" among these machines.
  3. The first electronic digital computer was only designed to solve systems of simultaneous equations of up to 29 variables, it ran (with problems) in early 1942.
  4. The first programmable electronic digital computer was only designed to break the German High Command's teletype cipher, it ran in late 1943 and 9 more improved versions of it were running by early 1945.
  5. The first general purpose programmable electronic digital computer was only designed to calculate firing tables for artillery pieces, it ran in late 1945 but its first real calculation was to simulate Edward Teller's "Classical Super" hydrogen bomb design (proving that design would not work). This machine saw close to 20 more years of use calculating firing tables for many artillery pieces before being retired and replaced with newer computers.
6. In 1822, Charles Babbage invented the "Difference Engine" to compute values of polynomial functions--essentially the first to come up with the idea of a programmable computer. Due to costs, the machine was not built until 1991, but the specifications in his design worked exactly.
