The most Famous Baseball player to wear the number 3 was George Herman Ruth, Jr. (February 6, 1895 - August 16, 1948). Babe Ruth, was born in the city of Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up to be know as the "Sultan of Swat." He has been named the greatest baseball player in history in various surveys and rankings, and his home run hitting prowess and charismatic personality made him a larger than life figure in the "Roaring Twenties". He was the first player to hit 60 home runs in one season (1927), a record which stood for 34 years until broken by Roger Maris in 1961. Ruth's lifetime total of 714 home runs at his retirement in 1935 was a record for 39 years, until broken by Hank Aaron in 1974. Unlike many power hitters, Ruth also hit for average: his .342 lifetime batting is tenth highest in baseball history, and in one season (1923) he hit .393, a Yankee record.*
The second player that wore number 3, who comes to mind, was Harmon Lillebrew (June 29, 1936 - ?). He grew up in a small town in North Idaho, yet became a household name nation wide in the 1960's. He was the American League MVP in 1965. Killebrew led the league in home runs six times, in RBIs three times, and was named to eleven All Star teams. Harmon was THE HOME RUN king of the 1960's. He hit 40 or more homers eight seasons. He helped the Minnesota Twins reach the World Series in 1965. Killebrew had his finest season in 1969, hitting 49 home runs, driving in 140 runs, and As a result, he was nicknamed "Killer" and was also called "Hammerin' Harmon". Althought Killebrew never hit 50 home runs in a single season, he did hit 49 homers in a season twice (1964, 1969). He hit the most home runs for any player in the 1960s.**
The third most famous player to wear jersey number 3 is Alexander Emmanuel "A-Rod" Rodriguez (July 27, 1975 - ?) Born in New York City but raised in his families native Dominican Republic, he is considered by many to be one of the best all-around baseball players of all time. He is the youngest player ever to hit 500 home runs. He is a 12-time AL All-Star; 3-time AL MVP (2003, 2005, 2007); 10-time AL Silver Slugger Award; 4-time AL Hank Aaron Award (2001-03, 2007); and 2-time AL Gold Glove Award (SS) (2002, 2003) winner. Although there is much personal contorversy surronding his life, his baseball career legacy has yet to be written.***
