New York was first settled as a fur trading post by the Dutch. There were many more wild animals in North America than heavily settled Europe, and pelts from beavers, which were especially plentiful in the area and further north, were in high demand in Europe. At that time travel was easiest and quickest by water, and the Hudson River provided a convenient way for Native Americans to bring their beaver pelts south to New Amsterdam to trade.
