Joan of Arc probably had the most unusual role. As a seventeen year old, illiterate, peasant girl, she commanded the French Army, a position unique in history. (As I think about it, the real miracle of Joan of Arc was not so much that she turned the tide of the war, many people have done things like that. The real miracle is that she got the job.)

Most were mothers of families.
Many were nuns.
Many did other things; the list of these things is very long and includes most things we regard as male occupations, ranging from stonemason to knight. In fact, a number of women were monarchs ruling major countries.
