1765 Juan Maria Antonio de Rivera makes the first known European expedition into Utah. 1776 Two Spanish friars, Silvestre Velez de Escalante and Francisco Atanasio Dominguez, travel through much of Utah and leave a detailed account of the area and its people. 1824-1825 Fur traders from New Mexico, Missouri, and Canada enter Utah. 1847 The first Mormons settlers arrive in Utah. 1850 Compromise Measures of 1850 create the Territory of Utah. 1850 The University of Deseret (now the University of Utah) is established. 1852 Slavery becomes legal in Utah Territory. 1853-1854 The Walker War is fought between Utes and Mormons. 1857 The Utah War is fought between the Mormons and federal authorities. 1862 Fort Douglas is established. 1863 The Bear River Massacre occurs when troops of California Volunteers kill 250 Shoshone. 1865-1868 The Black Hawk War is fought between Utes and Mormons. 1869 The first transcontinental railroad is completed at Promontory. 1875 Brigham Young Academy (now Brigham Young University) is established in Provo. 1890 The Mormon Church advises members to abstain from polygyny. 1896 Utah is admitted to the Union as the 45th state (January 4). 1900 A coal mine explosion kills 200 miners at Scofield. 1915 Joe Hill, a songwriter for the Industrial Workers of the World, is executed. 1924 A coal explosion at Castle Gate kills 172 workers. 1942 The Topaz War Relocation Center is established and used for the internment of people of Japanese descent during World War II. 1978 The Mormon Church allows blacks to be ordained as priests. 1995 Salt Lake City is named host city for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
