A tyrant was appointed as a sole ruler of a city-state to bring the aristocracy (oligarchs) under control, and rule for the benefit of all. They fell into disrepute as they had to establish a personal bodyguard to protect them from assassination by the oligarchs. This cost money and the oligarchs had to tax the people to get it; the people didn't like being taxed, so they eventually replaced the tyrants with a democracy.
Kings, oligarchs, tyrants, democrats.
The oligarchs directed things to their own benefit.
In Athens, the oligarchy was ousted by a populist Tyranny, which lost popularity after 50 years,. The oligarchs tried to take over again, but Cliesthenes introduced a limited democracy in 508 BCE. This oligarchs took over during the Persian invasion of the 480s BCE, as they led the city-state in the war. The retained this control until 460 BCE when Ephialtes reintroduced a democracy. The oligarchs murdered him for this, but his deputy Pericles kept it going, eventually converting it into a radical democracy.
It removed the control of the oligarchs and gave the citizens control of their city-state.
It started with kings, then oligarchs, then tyrants, then oligarchs, then a democracy, then oligarchs, then kings.

Your mom! ancient Greece
A tyrant was appointed to protect the lower class citizens from the depredations of the upper class oligarchs who controlled the city and organised things for their own profit and benefit. This worked for half a cetury, but the tyrant had to establish a strong personal guard to protect himself from the resentful oligarchs. To pay for this he levied a tax. Greeks hated taxes, and this drew resentment against the tyrant, forgetting how bad it had been under the oligarchs fifty years before. The oligarchs mobilised this discontent, resulting in expulsion of the third tyrant Hippias, Unfortunately for the oligarchs, Cleisthenes introduced a limited democracy, which kept the oligarchs from regaining control.
