  • You had to be fit and strong,
  • Be able to take orders,
  • Be good with either a sword and/or a bow and arrow,
  • Able to ride a horse if you were in the cavalry,
  • Be {relatively} rich (this would help since you had to pay for your food, uniform, weapons and even your own funeral)!
  • Finally you had to be brave (but that's a given).

The ancient Roman military forces for land battles were called legions. From Rome's earliest days as a republic, Roman land armies changed the battle formation called the phalanx to a unique battle formation used by Roman legions. The formation used a set of cohorts, calvary units and auxiliary forces that became their model of victory after victory.

Another important aspect of the Roman military was endless sessions of war exercises and physical exercises designed to keep the soldiers ready for battle at anytime. Another characteristic was the fortified campsites the armies built after a day's march. The members of a Roman army were well disciplined, and desertion was punished by death.

They had to be extremely tough due to the long periods of time they spent away from loved ones and their homes. Furthermore, they had to be very physically fit since their training included 20-mile marches whilst carrying pounds of gear and weapons
