My son had to answer a question like this for a 4th grade report. Here's what we found:

FDR led American out of the Depression by coming up with social programs like Social Security, the National Recovery Act, the Works Progress Administration and more. Some say this was the beginning of big government which led to a drain on taxpayers. Others say he saved the country and these programs provide a safety net that an affluent country like American should have. But, let's not get into that debate here.

The only other thing we found is that some say he could have done more to prevent or stem the Holocaust.
