He was the 'bad guy' during the conflict. He incarcerated his opponent Francisco Madero, prompting the first stage of the revolution. After Ciudad Juarez fell to Pancho Villa (May 1911), Porfirio Diaz resigned and went into exile, thus ending the initial stage of the Mexican Revolution.

Porfirio Diaz changed the direction of government in Mexico by giving a structure and stability to a very erratic system. Before Diaz only two Mexican presidents finished a term in office completely. Also his government was a centralist conservative government that helped Mexico become more industrious through foreign investment. Economically Mexico became better than what it used to be, but socially Diaz neglected his people by becoming known as "father of foreigners and Step father of Mexicans". His government wanted to keep the status quo so that industry could continue to prosper. He also promoted the clergy and gave Mexico its first taste of true Dictatorship
