Madam C. J. Walker was an entrepreneur, philanthropist, anti-lynching activist and patron of the arts. She is best known as a pioneer of the early 20th century hair care and cosmetics industries. She is in the National Business Hall of Fame and the National Women's Hall of Fame.

She didn't get her nickname, she changed it. In 1906, she married Charles Joseph Walker, and officially changed her name to Madame C. J Walker.
