Gerald Ford served in the US Naval Reserve during World War II. After about a year as an instructor in the Navy (based in Chapel Hill, NC) he was deployed on the aircraft carrier USS Montgomery - seeing plenty of action in the Pacific theater of the war. He served about a year and a half on the ship until it was rendered unfit for service from fire damage suffered during the December 1944 typhoon that hit Admiral Halsey's fleet off the Philliipines. He was reassigned as an instructor until the end of his service in 1946.
