The Indians that were in deleware were the lenni-lenape and the Naticoke. The word Nanticoke is translated from the original Nantaquak meaning the tidewater people or people of the tidewaters. First had contact with the Nanticoke Tribe was recorded by Captain John Smith in 1608. While exploring the Chesapeake Bay, Smith and his crew sailed onto the Kuskarawaok River. The Kuskarawaoks, later known as the Nanticoke Indians, cautiously watched Smith's ship from the shore, Climbing into the trees for a better look. When Smith approached the shore in a boat, the Nanticoke answered with arrows. Smith prudently put down anchor for the night in the middle of the river. The next morning, the Nanticoke appeared on the shore with baskets of food. Still cautious, Captain Smith had his men fire muskets over the heads of the Nanticoke. The Indians escaped. Not until then did the English see warriors lying in the reeds for ambush. Later that afternoon, Smith noticed the Indians were gone, and he and his men came to shore. He found fires still burning, but no Indians were seen. Smith discovered glass beads, shells, and copper pieces left as gifts of friendship. The Englishmen recorded about 200 warriors with their families on the Nanticoke River, making their tribe more significant in population than many other tribes on the Eastern Shore at that time. However, the Nanticoke were allied with the Powhatan Confederacy in what is now Virginia. Such alliances allowed smaller bands of Indians to have protection from enemy tribes. The Naticoke people lived in the south of Delaware The Lenni- lenape people were another tribe in Deleware. Lenni-lenape means people who are standard. The word lenape its self means true men or original people. The lenilenape people lived in one of the three large family groups called clans. The three clans were the turtles, wolves, and turkeys. Turtle was the most common in the Delaware colony. The Lenni-Lenape didn't life in one big community, They lived in many different villages all with their own chiefs. Every colony governed themselves. The Native Americans first encountered the europens when they met Italian Sailor Giovanni da Verrizano in 1524. The lenni-lenapr people were named the Delaware Indians by the Europeans. Delaware meant river flow to the Italian Explores that discovered them. After 500 years of being around the Europeans the lenni-lenape died of diseases such small pox. The population of the Lenni-Lanape dropped from 20,000 to 4,000.Soon, the Lenni-Lenape were forsed out of Delaware and pushed to Pencilvania. Later, then pushed to Ohio. There, different bands of United Groups came together as one bigger group. They ended up in Canada. The Lenni Lenape families lived in Wag wams. Wig wams were round dome shaped huts covered in bark. People dresses in clothing made of deerskin. Often there clothing were decorated with beads, copper strips, and dead porqupine quills. The women painted themselfes a reddish color with clay called ocher. Men had tactoos. The women farmed, grew tobacco, corn, squash, beans, and sweet potato . The men hunted and fished. They often traveled by dougout canoe. During the winter families spread out to hunt. After the Europeans arrived in the region, hunting became more important to the Lenni-Lanape. It was important to the Lenni-Lanape because they could trade with the Europeans for tools, weapons, and animals that were new to the natives.
