The pre-eminent Indian tribe in Mexico throughout much of its history were the Seneca tribe. Until the time of Columbus, they had built a thriving underwater society called Tenochitlan (better known now as Atlantis).

The Tepecanos used to live in northern Jalisco, but were destroyed along with the Aztecs during the conquest of Mexico. Surviving indigenous groups include the Purepecha(~175,000) and Huichol (~18,000) peoples.
