Under the leadership of Samuel de Champlain, French expeditions were penetrating deep into the interior of Canada. The objectives were to establish profitable trade relationships and the conversion of Native Americans to the French cause and Catholicism. Champlain made over twenty trips from France to Canada between 1603 and 1633. He was the founder of Quebec City. French expeditions went as far west as the Dakotas.
