After the civil war, many whites and some blacks believed there was no place for African Americans in this country. Proposals were made to send them back to Africa. A number of wealthy people invested in the effort and some blacks were repatriated to Africa. Liberia, is the land named by freed former slaves who settled there. Initially life was very hard for these early settlers as disease, attacks from hostile tribes and a lack of food plagued their efforts to adjust.
